When travelling turns into drawing....
About Japan, Reno, as lot of travellers, was largely ignorant , except for a few images of a fantasized Orient. It is during a trip across the country for a month, riding a motor-bike from Tokyo to Mount Daisen that he could confront his fancies with reality, getting inspired from life. He has been always fascinated by the vision of red temples with a back site of lush nature and daily life sceneries in which sacred is part of everything. This has fed his desire for this trip, far away from countries he is used to travel all over together with his wife Claire. Equally, Reno, great admirer of the magnificent sketchbook drawn in Japan by Mathurin Méheut in 1914, was looking forward to see, at last, the does of the Nara Park, so delightfully drawn by the Brittany painter.
Back home, Reno unexpectedly found himself using more often ink than pencil in a similar way as in Japanese drawings and prints. But also discovering in his painting graphic influences, coming out unconsciously as certain strokes inspired by mangas. Having read the famous literary series"The Summit of the Gods" is certainly a good reason for that. As a wink for detail and perfection loved by the Japanese, Reno also enjoyed looking for a certain form of concern in the achievement of his drawings but keeping the character of his so alive patterns.
The resulting work is an illustrated emotional tribute to the heart of Japan yesterday and nowadays.
